Saudi Arabia Severs Diplomatic Ties with Iran

On Sunday, Saudi Arabia announced it will cut all diplomatic ties with Iran. Saudi Arabian officials have 48 hours to leave the country.

Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told a news conference that “Riyadh will not allow the Islamic Republic to undermine the Sunni kingdom’s security,” according to Reuters.

He added: “The Iranian regime has a long record of violating foreign diplomatic missions.”

The move comes following an attack by protestors on the Saudi Arabian embassy in Tehran in retaliation for Saudi Arabia executing a prominent Iranian cleric along with 46 others. Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr was known for being outspoken about the way Saudi Arabia treated the Shiite minority in the country. The Iranians say al-Nimr should not have been lumped in with the other terrorists who were executed.

“To lump this guy with terrorists is a stretch,” Frederic Wehrey, an analyst at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, told The New York Times on Saturday. “To my knowledge, he never called for armed insurrection.”
